網(wǎng)球運(yùn)動(dòng)的前世今生 Tennis story

　　Each summer at the US Open, the world’s top tennis players smash rubber balls back and forth across a net, while crowds wait politely until the end of the match before cheering. Such is the modern sport of tennis, once the genteel pastime of the idle rich. First played in thirteenth-century France, tennis was an indoor sport, with players using the palms of their hands to hit the ball. Later, in the sixteenth century, people picked up rackets and headed to outdoor courts for the action.  story

　　每年夏天，世界頂尖的網(wǎng)球好手都會(huì)齊聚美國(guó)網(wǎng)球公開賽，在球網(wǎng)兩側(cè)相互回?fù)粢活w橡皮球，觀眾則彬彬有禮地在一旁守候，直到比賽結(jié)束時(shí)才報(bào)以歡呼聲。這就是現(xiàn)代網(wǎng)球運(yùn)動(dòng)的實(shí)況；在過(guò)去，這種運(yùn)動(dòng)可是有錢人用來(lái)消磨時(shí)光的上流社會(huì)休閑活動(dòng)。網(wǎng)球起源于13世紀(jì)的法國(guó)，當(dāng)時(shí)還是一種球員以掌心擊球的室內(nèi)運(yùn)動(dòng)。后來(lái)到了16世紀(jì)，人們才拿起球拍，走向戶外球場(chǎng)從事這項(xiàng)活動(dòng)。

　　Tennis is still much the same, although nowadays it’s enjoyed by people from all walks of life—not just aristocrats. Professional player Pete Sampras, for example, is the son of Greek immigrants to the US. He began playing as a child, hitting balls against the wall in his basement. Sampras soon dominated the courts, not because of pretensions, but because of his ability to“ace”the ball: Sampras can serve it so hard that opponents can’t return it.

　　網(wǎng)球運(yùn)動(dòng)至今并沒(méi)有太大的變革，不過(guò)喜愛(ài)這項(xiàng)運(yùn)動(dòng)的人卻遍及各行各業(yè)——而不僅僅是貴族了。舉例來(lái)說(shuō)，職業(yè)選手皮特·桑普拉斯是美籍希臘移民之子，小時(shí)候就在家里地下室對(duì)著墻壁擊球，開始了他的網(wǎng)球生涯。桑普拉斯很快便縱橫球場(chǎng)，靠的不是自命非凡，而是發(fā)球得分的能力：因?yàn)樯Ｆ绽�斯發(fā)球力量很大，對(duì)手毫無(wú)還手的余地。
