An Unforgettable Girl
On August 31, 2000, after a 12-hour journey by bus in the rain, I arrived in Yantai, a coastal city of Shandong Province. It was the first time when I went to so far a place from my hometown. I had just graduated from a teachers’ university as a junior college student, majoring in English language teaching. I was to further my study as a senior in Yantai for another two years. After getting off the bus, I found the rain had stopped and I was completely lost. Considering my limited economic situation, instead of taking a taxi, I got on the bus No. 9, which is said to be available to my destination. It is on that very bus that very bus that I came across an unforgettable girl. Then it was about seven o’clock in the evening. The sea wind was very cool, touching my tired body. The bus was very crowded. With my great luggage, I even could not find a place to settle down my feet. I did not know at which station I should get down; even worse, I did not know that the bus just passes the crossroad which is 500 meters away from the university, instead of passing the very gate of it. Although I had told the conductor to inform me where I should get down, I was not sure she could remember my asking for favor. Poor at mandarin, I was too timid to repeat it. I was absolutely at a loss what to do. May the God bless me.
It was completely dark, after we passed several stations. At about half past seven, we came to a small station. As soon as the bus was about to leave for another station, when I heard the sound of knocking at the window, with a soft voice saying, “Hi, pal, why not get down? Here we are.” Looking outside of the bus window, I saw a girl who was very shy and a little bit worried when talking to me. I suddenly came back to the reality from my dream-like unconsciousness and got down the bus in a jump, with bags in each hand. I greeted her and expressed my gratitude sincerely, but in poor mandarin. Then I saw she was a petite but athletic girl, with middle stature, white skin, and a ponytail, wearing a mini-skirt and a pair of sports shoes, with a bag on her back. Later, I knew she was in grade 2, majoring in geography, born in another coastal city of Shanding Province- Qingdao.
What I have been regretting now is that I did not ask her name then, and later I did not go to her department to look for her, not mention to thank her. In the following two years, I came across a girl for several times. They were very alike. But I was not sure and did not have the courage to recognize her. It was all because of my terrible introvert nature.
That evening the girl did not leave until I settled in the very building where I lived for two years, without giving me a chance to say “thanks a lot”. That night, I made a very sweet dream in which the girl married me.
I want to beg the girl’ pardon for my unwillingly neglect of beautiful friendship. I miss her and want to see her again, because she, younger than me, told to me, silently, what is worth cherishing, what is worth pursuing, what I should do to my character, what I should do to others, and the very fact that the relationship among people is a very beautiful thing.
