(language) have a clear understanding of the historical story, The Night of the Horse, including the time, the place, the cause of the story and the development and the end of the story. (important and difficult point) 2. (language skills) scan the story for specific information and skim the story for its main idea. 3. (learning) broaden students’ horizon of international perspectives, especially the Greek mythology; share their views and cooperate with others. 4. (Affect) be confident in reading, develop their interests in reading foreign historical stories, and appreciate the Greek myths. 5. (cultural) strengthen their intercultural awareness. Teaching content: Topic: The Night of the Horse Vocabulary: guard, pull, drag, citizen, celebrate, fight, succeed, trick, prisoner, square Skills: (reading) scanning and skimming Student’s prior knowledge: Students have previewed the vocabulary at home. Anticipated problems and possible solutions: 1. Students may have difficulties in understand the new words, thus T will explain the new words in context while introducing the background information of the story. 2. Students may lack the background information, which become the obstacles of understand the story, thus T will give a brief introduction of the Greek myth. Teaching materials and aids: PowerPoint, pictures and video, record and blackboard. Teaching procedures: STEP TIME TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY PURPOSE Lead in 4 mins (1) Greeting (2) Lead in, T: “The weather is fine today. Why not go out and have a trip? Which country do you want to go?” (3) T will show some famous pictures of historical places and then set the scene in Greece. (1) Greeting (2) Brainstorm: think of the countries they want to travel. to gain Ss’ attention to the lesson set an scene in which Ss are interested lead to the topic of the story Pre-reading 10 mins (1) T will show a picture of Trojan horse and ask students to describe it. “This horse was very famous in Greece. Let’s see what happened about the horse.” (2) T: “A war broke out between Greece and Trojan. They hav e fought for nine years. But neither side could be the winner. So the following story happened.” New words will be explained. (1) Try to imagine all possible things related to the horse in the picture. (2) Have a general idea about the story and learn the new words. to arouse Ss’ interests in the wooden horse to activate Ss’ schema to clear the difficulties before reading While reading 15 mins (1) T will play the record of the story: “Turn to page 50. Listen to the tape and try to find out who, when, where the story are talking about.” (2) T will check the three answers with the class one by one. (3) T: “Turn to next page and read the six questions. Circle the key words in each question.” (4) T: “Please read the story again. Try to scan for the specific information required in the questions. Don’t read sentence by sentence. Focus on the key words.” (5) Check the answers with class and find out where the answer is. (6) T will draw a table on the blackboard to list the detailed information. (1) Listen to the record and figure out the main characters, the time and the place in which the story happened. (2) Check the answers. (3) Read the questions and point out the key words in each question. (4) Scan the story for the answers. (5) Find out the position of the answers. (6) Have a clear picture of the story in mind. to practice the reading skills, scanning and skimming to check Ss’ comprehension Post reading 10 mins (1) T: “Please read the story for the 3rd time. Skim for the main idea. After you finish reading, tell your partner the main idea of the story.” (2) T will invite two students to retell the story. (3) T: “Since we have already read the story, do you think the Greeks are clever? What do you think of the citizens of Troy?” (Use some adjectives to describe) (4) Show a short clip of the Trojan horse and explain the meaning of Trojan horse nowadays. (1) Skim for the main idea of the story and retell the story to their partners. (2) Two Ss will be the representatives to retell the story to the whole class. (3) Share their opinions towards Greece and the city of Troy. (try their best to use adjectives to describe) (4) Enjoy the video clip and learn more about the Trojan horse. focus Ss’ attention on the main meaning of the story to check Ss’ comprehension to build the basis for the output Homework 1 min T: “Form a group of 10 students and act out the story. Tomorrow I will invite some of you to perform the play.” Read the story and try best to understand it well.
