Use References On Your Resume

Employers usually ask candidates for references before giving them a job offer. They can ask for references up front during the screening interview, during the course of the actual job interview, and after the completion of the selection process.

Here are some tips on how to make appropriate use of your references:

Get permission from your potential references before giving out their names

References, as you may have realized, are of utmost importance. So, treat them with the respect they deserve. It is necessary that you ask your references for permission to use their names in the early phase of your job campaign itself. If they grant you permission, ask them if they would be willing to look at your resume and discuss your resume strategy with them.

In any given situation, you may use two or three references. However, it is recommended that you create a list of four to six references. You can use your professors, former managers, family friends, or people whom you met through community services as your references.

  Treat your references with respect

You must ensure that your references are not bothered too frequently. Avoid using a reference more than three times. If you have to use references that have been used three times already, contact them first and ask them if they would be willing to help you again. Before asking for help, thank them for helping you in the past and explain why you need to use their names again.

You must make a conscious effort to ensure that your references are not called too frequently in the first place. In case your prospective employers ask you to provide references in the beginning stage of the selection process, tell them the names you would use, but also state that you would prefer if they are contacted only at a later stage. Tell your prospective employers that you don’t want your references to be bothered too frequently, and that you are having talks with other companies as well.

When the time comes to disclose contact information, tell your prospective employer that you want to call your references. First, to give them some information about the position for which you are being considered, and second, to introduce the individual who is going to speak to them.

The above approach has numerous advantages. It allows you to tell your references about the position for which you’ve applied. It demonstrates to the recruiter that you respect the privacy of your references and treat them with respect. It enables you to avoid reference checking in the early stages of the interview process.

  Call your references first

It is recommended that you call your references before the hiring manager contacts them. Tell your references about the position, the person who would be calling, and what specific information the caller might be interested in. If possible, ask your references to stress on certain characteristics.

Lastly, remember to call your references again after a few days to check if they got a call. If they didn’t receive a call, contact the hiring manager to check if he/she is having trouble getting through to your references. If that is the case, you should ask your references to contact the recruiter on your behalf.
