和雞蛋有關(guān)的英文俗語
在我國口語中，常把壞人稱為“壞蛋”，把考試成績得零分稱為“鴨蛋”。無獨(dú)有偶，英語中也有與之相對(duì)應(yīng)的表達(dá)法：
a bad egg——壞人，壞人;失敗的計(jì)劃;
duck’s egg 或 duck’s-egg——鴨蛋，零分。
除此之外，英語中還有五花八門的“蛋”：
good egg——好人，好東西(俚);
Good egg !——真好!妙極了!
golden eggs——大利益(來自希臘殺鵝取卵的故事);
goose eggs——零分(俚)，(被打而產(chǎn)生的)青腫塊;
dumb egg——傻瓜(美俚);
curate’s egg——好壞參半的東西(英);
old egg——老朋友，老兄(俚);
hard-boiled egg——無情的人，吝嗇鬼(俚);
roc’s egg——鏡花水月，虛幻的.事物;
Easter egg——復(fù)活節(jié)彩蛋;
nest egg或nest-egg——(轉(zhuǎn)義)儲(chǔ)備金。
英語中由egg構(gòu)成的習(xí)語也很多：
1、 as sure as eggs is are eggs——千真萬確，無疑地
As sure as eggs is eggs he will come tonight (今晚他肯定來)。
2、 break the egg(s) in sb’s pocket (或 in the pocket of sb.)——打破某人的計(jì)劃
We have broken the eggs in the enemy’s pocket (我們已打破敵人的計(jì)劃)。
3、 as full as an egg is of meat 或 as full of meat as an egg——塞滿的，最好的，飽學(xué)的
He is as full of meat as an egg where the law is concerned (在法律方面，他是學(xué)識(shí)淵博的)。
4、 bring one’s eggs to a bad market——失敗，失算
It is a pity that he would have brought his eggs to a bad market (他的計(jì)劃竟然失敗了，真遺憾)。
5、 have egg on one’s face——顯得愚蠢
The government has egg on its face over the failure of its prices and incomes plan (政府因物價(jià)和收入計(jì)劃的失敗而顯得愚蠢)。
6、 have eggs on the spit——手頭有事，很忙
He said he had eggs on the spit(他說他很忙)。
7、 lay an egg——(演出等)失敗
He laid an egg as the romantic hero(他演一個(gè)浪漫的主角而大大失敗)。
8、 have / put all ( one’s ) eggs in one basket——孤注一擲After he failed twice , he decided to have all his eggs in on basket (連次失敗后，他決定孤注一擲)。
9、 teach one’s grandmother ( how ) to suck eggs——教訓(xùn)長輩，班門弄斧
Don’t try to teach your grandmother ( how ) to suck eggs (不要班門弄斧)。
10、 have an egg from the oof bird——(口)得到一筆遺產(chǎn)
Ralph will have a good seized egg from the oof bird when his uncle dies (等他叔叔死了，拉爾夫就可以獲得一大筆遺產(chǎn))。
11、 tread / walk ( as ) on / upon eggs——小心翼翼地行動(dòng)，如履薄冰
That old man always walks on eggs (那老頭做事總是小心翼翼)
此外，還有以下這些習(xí)慣用語：
( as ) full as an egg——(俚)爛醉
rush in the egg——防患于未然
from the egg to the apple——自始至終(羅馬人的正餐開頭吃蛋，最后吃水果，故有此語)
in the egg——在初期
go lay an egg ( s ) ——(美)別管閑事，滾開
like / as two eggs——完全一樣
with eggs on one’s face——(美)受屈辱
在英語中用egg構(gòu)成的諺語也為數(shù)不少，以下列出幾條：
Better an egg today than a hen tomorrow (今天一個(gè)蛋，勝過明天一只雞)。
He that would have eggs must endure the cackling of hens (要吃雞就不要討厭母雞咯咯叫——要享受就要吃點(diǎn)苦)。
It is very hard to shave an egg (給雞蛋刮臉是很困難的;緣木求魚)。
Never cackle till your egg is laid (事未完成莫先夸耀)。
